Google and Microsoft Release Annual Revenue Report: Impacts of AI on Revenue

In its recently published annual revenue report, Google and Microsoft revealed their revenues for the year 2022. Interestingly, the report shows that AI technology had minimal impact on both the volume of search engine usage and advertising revenue. However, the report does not include data for 2023, and we will have to wait and see if there are any changes.

Despite this, the revenue generated from the classic search engines and non-advertising sources increased from $9.6 billion to $40.4 billion, an 1.8% increase. However, it is worth noting that the Covid-19 crisis had severely impacted Google’s revenues, making the current figures more reflective of normalcy. Sander Pichai, the CEO of Google, stated that AI technology will clearly change the rules of the game in the near future. Indeed, he compared this development to when traffic shifted from desktops to mobile devices.

Microsoft’s AI technology has also had significant impacts on its operations. They reported a revenue increase of 10-13% and an increase in Edge downloads and Bing usage. However, the report does not provide real numbers for usage, only noting that Pinchat now has 100 million users.

Despite these developments, some experts note a lack of innovation in the field recently. For example, there is little news on the development of new technologies in Dali, an image-generating tool used by almost 3 million users. Additionally, the newest developments have been relatively minor compared to past years, leading some to suggest that the industry has hit a lull.

    Entirely AI-Generated Ad Gains Attention

In other news, an AI-generated advertisement has recently gone viral. Created by a user named Pizza, the ad was entirely made by GPT-4, an AI language model, in just three hours. It included images, text, and clips, which Pizza edited together in Adobe’s After Effects.

While the ad is not perfect, with some issues with the hand movements of the AI-generated characters, it represents a significant development in the industry. Pizza reportedly used a startup called Helene Van Lab to create the voice synthesis and added his own music. This is just one example of what the future of AI in advertising could look like.

    Conclusion

While the recent revenue reports from Google and Microsoft show that AI technology has not had significant impacts on their operations in the past year, the potential for changes in the near future is noteworthy. Additionally, the entirely AI-generated ad created by Pizza is a clear sign of the industry’s continued development. As always, we will have to wait and see what the future holds for AI technology.
